Is starting a forex brokerage profitable?

Short answer: it can be — but profitability is earned through client acquisition, retention and risk discipline, not handed to you by the model. Most new brokers fail on economics they could have predicted. Here’s the honest picture.

What actually drives the economics

A brokerage makes money in some combination of three ways: spread and commission on client volume (the A-book engine), client trading outcomes if you internalise flow (the B-book engine), and the margin between the two in a hybrid setup. Which mix you run is your model decision — and it sets your ceiling.

But revenue is only half the story. Profitability comes down to three things the marketing rarely emphasises:

  • Client acquisition cost. This is usually the largest and most underestimated number. If it costs more to win a client than that client is worth over their lifetime, no model saves you.
  • Retention. Traders churn. A brokerage that constantly refills a leaking bucket spends itself to death. Retention often matters more than acquisition.
  • Risk discipline. For B-book and hybrid models, a few uncontrolled exposures in a volatile week can erase months of profit. Profitability here is a function of control, not luck.

Why new brokers fail

Rarely because the model doesn’t work — usually because of:

  • under-budgeting client acquisition while over-spending on infrastructure,
  • choosing the wrong jurisdiction and getting cut off from banking or markets,
  • running a B-book without the risk controls to survive a bad week,
  • and treating the launch as the finish line rather than the start.

The honest takeaway

Yes, a well-run brokerage can be a high-margin business — providers aren’t wrong about that. But “well-run” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. The brokerages that profit are the ones that control acquisition cost, retain clients, and manage risk with discipline. The model is the engine; these are the fuel and the brakes.
